Belize National Song Competition 2011

The Belize National Song Competition is becoming a symbol of Belizean talent and pride. It’s great to see upcoming and established artists getting a chance to shine on the same stage. BZHypeMeter favourites Denise Castillo is in the Patriotic Song Category and her entry ‘My Sweet Belize’ is a beautiful melodic entry that is defineitly one of the favourites. While another BZHypeMeter regular, Floyd Lacayo and TY combine for an entry in Carnival Song category. Other favourites like Ernestine Carballo, Supa-G, Berne and Boss Lady have excellent entries in the Carnival Category which will make finiding a winner near impossible but all songs submitted are worthy of your time. Most importantly this is a moment where Belizean music takes the forefront. The songs  are excellent, oozing quality and creativity. So take a listen and vote here.

Belize Fashion Show

The Sunny Season fashion show featuring the amazing Fancy Purple Paint  clothing line was held in Belmopan, Belize and I was in attendance. It was a bit of an adventure getting to Belmopan by 7 on a Friday evening but it was well worth it. Great designs, stunning Belizean models, a beautiful audience and a great atmosphere meant a great time.

Congragulations to Rebecca Stirm, the designer of ‘Fancy Purple Paint’, for pulling off a great show with stunning pieces. We will have more from Rebecca when she does an interview with BZHypeMeter.com in the near future.

Belize Agriculture Show 2011

So I visited the Belize agricultural tradeshow 2011 last weekend. It was everything I expected after my 5 year hiatus. Live music, great spirits, lot of people and ofcourse, lots of heat 🙂

Fact, Belize is very diverse culturally but what really makes it unique is how small it is for its great diversity; so everyone basically sees and interacts with everyone…pretty cool by me.

Whose a cute puppy wuppy???

Jag Camp gave a great performance with Jacob Diggs, Deady and Jeanie tearing it down…but that most adorable little girl stole the show asking Jeanie “how long she has worked with Mr. Jag?”,everyone said a collective awwwww. More pictures of their performance in the set below.

Strong message.

Belizean Promoter

Manuel Cuellar of Kings Promotions, is one of Belize’s up and coming promoters and I recently got the opportunity to sit with him and discuss the promotion business in Belize. He is an events promoter that operates out of Belize City and promotes dances and entertainment events in the country of Belize.  He personally became involved in promoting dances at the clubs, about three years ago, when he along with Freddie Gabrouel, held a dance at Palm Island with SJCJC. After seeing the success of the event he decided to try the business for himself.  Throughout the years he has held multiple events, the most memorable being bringing in the Chinese Assassin and Black Chinney on various occasions. He also did “Stress Free Friday” at Club Next last year summer.

The business itself is a gamble and not all the time that one has a dance means that you will walk away the winner. Sometimes as much as $10,000 is invested in big events on some nights, based on the turnout he would make back that amount or more, but on other times it just might not pan out.

Either way, his strategy is to plan events on dates that he know is going to be successful based on past experience. For example “Stress Free Friday” is definitely going to be on this summer again, possibly at club next, so hold on to that money for the summer.

Also Manuel says he’s thinking about doing a big event but due to the outcome of the “Shyne Album release fiasco” he is reconsidering because he does not want the same to happen and disappoint the Belizean public. So until then, he plans to continue doing promotions in the city, cayes and out district and work, work, work.

So for all those who are interested in when Kings Promotions is going to have another big event, maybe with Black Chinney, then just keep on the lookout and stay posted to Bzhypemeter.com.
